Ruthin Castle Hotel, Denbighshire |
Built before 1277, Ruthin Castle, the "Red Fort", dominates the historic Welsh market town of Ruthin. It nestles in acres of private landscaped gardens, parkland and woods alongside the river Clwyds, surrounded by its ancient walled dry moat. I walked through the entrance, past the beautiful pink marble monumental lions that were reclining proudly on their plinths, the red welcoming carpet certainly giving me the feeling that Ruthin Castle is a rather special place to stay. I couldn’t fail to feel the sense of history in such magnificent surroundings, but it still felt comfortable. I hate grand, formal hotels; they’re far too intimidating for me, so my initial friendly welcome here certainly put me at my ease.
The Bedrooms:
Many of the sixty-two rooms have four-poster beds and are quite large, with stunning views over the estate. All bedrooms are served by a lift. The rooms each have their own personality, which is a welcome change from many soulless hotels. You have everything you need in your room to relax and simply enjoy your stay. I enjoyed having an aromatherapy and some beauty treatments too, which was my ideal pampering.
The Dining Room:
The Prince of Wales Dining Room has won a Rosette Award from the AA and a Dining Award from the RAC. Whether you have planned a family celebration, a romantic dinner, or are just catching up with friends I’m sure you will find, as I did, that it will be a meal to remember, especially as much is made of fresh regional produce. If you’re looking for something light then visit the Library Bar, the Inner Hall or the Cornwallis Lounge for a selection of snacks, afternoon tea, or just coffee and enjoy relaxing on soft sofas and easy chairs.
The Garden:
Wander the estate’s thirty acres of parkland and woods and simply enjoy the tranquility as your stresses disappear.
Wedding venue:
Do you dream of being a Princess on your wedding day? Then allow Ruthin Castle to make your fairytale complete. Use the Grand Salon with its massive, sparkling crystal chandelier and glittering mirrors – it’s quite magical. Or what about a themed costume wedding in the magnificent Mediaeval Banquet Hall? Whatever you wish for your special day, the Ruthin Castle team are there to help. Civil Wedding Ceremonies can also be conducted on the premises.
Conference facilities:
Make this an ideal meeting venue and team building centre, whilst the Business Centre provides an 'office away from home'.
What’s of interest nearby?
Whatever your taste you’ll find plenty to see and do. There’s Ruthin itself, the City of Chester, Snowdon - Wales’ highest mountain, ‘The Italian Village’ of Portmeirion, Llangollen and also historic castles at Caernarfon, Conwy, Rhuddlan, Chirk, Beaumaris and Ruthin.
Active guests: You can exercise in the gym or play golf on the associated Ruthin-Pwllglas course. Anglers will enjoy the private fishing in the river Clywd. Or go rambling, climbing, pony trekking, white water rafting, go-karting or canoeing, there’s just so much to do.
Why visit?
It’s such a lovely location with beautiful bedrooms, fine food and warm Welsh hospitality from staff that had just the right balance of friendliness and professionalism. It’s my second visit here which really speaks for itself.
