Guidfa House, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, |
My partner and I were desperate to take a break and thought that elegant, Georgian Guidfa House, was just what we needed. Situated, in the lovely village of Crossgate, just outside Llandrindod Wells, our hosts Anne and Tony Millan gave us a warm welcome, which is always a good start!
The Bedrooms:
The bright and spacious rooms, double or twin are all en-suite. Centrally heated, with colour television and tea/coffee making facilities, we had everything we required. There’s also a room on the ground floor for guests that are not too active. Actually I’m sure that the newly upgraded Coach House suite will tempt you, it has a super-king bed a wonderful relaxing Jacuzzi bath.
The Sitting Room:
We enjoyed using this elegant room with its open log fire such a comfortable place to chill out in after a long day walking around the beautiful Eland Valley. Tony was on hand to serve tea or coffee or in our case a couple of glasses of red wine from the bar – perfect.
The Dining Room:
The domain of Cordon Bleu trained Anne, who excelled in producing hearty breakfasts and delightful dinners. Nowadays Anne follows the healthy trend on food, but she stilled tempted us, and won, with her very naughty puddings that had us spoilt for choice!
The Garden:
After those scrummy puds we wandered out onto the front lawn and strolled around the garden which was full of unusual plants and trees and made a promise to return again very quickly.
What’s of Interest Nearby?
We enjoyed the stunning scenery on a drive to Powys Castle, Hergest Croft Gardens but ran out of time to visit Hay on Wye with its host of antique book shops. Elan Valley was spectacular and the Radnor and Hafron Forests are quite close. Bird-watchers will love this area especially the local RSPB Red Kite feeding station.
For active guests:
Llandrindod Wells has its own 18 hole golf course as well as good indoor and outdoor bowling facilities. As Guidfa House is set between the Brecon Beacon and the Snowdonia National Parks, it’s perfect for walkers, climbers or for those wishing to drive and enjoy the stunning scenery. Tony is happy to arrange cycle hire, or pony trekking or perhaps hang-gliding or rally driving courses might just tempt you?
Why visit?
Guidfa House gave us a three day break that encouraged us to relax and unwind whilst enjoying superb food and excellent wines from a well-stocked cellar, Professional but unobtrusive staff gave a really relaxing atmosphere, nothing was stuffy or pretentious. We actually felt so ‘at home’ that it felt as though we were visiting friends, which made our stay perfect.
