Egerton Grey Country House Hotel, Porthkerry |
I had planned a weekend in Cardiff, but as I didn’t wish to stay in the city itself, I decided to visit Egerton Grey as I’d been told it was rather special. Resting in a peaceful and secluded valley with views down to the sea, you cannot see it from the road, but as you drive down the lane through the beautiful valley, there is the Egerton Grey Hotel, a truly distinguished Country House. Dating from the 17th Century, the house was a rectory in Victorian times and has been magnificently preserved with beautifully restored Edwardian bathrooms, original brasswork, open fireplaces and ornate mouldings. It opened as a small luxury hotel in 1988 and boasts a wealth of fine antiques, porcelain and paintings. Hosts Richard Morgan-Price and Huw Thomas have done a truly splendid job in creating an atmosphere that is so welcoming, peaceful and comfortable; you could literally be visiting friends.
The Rooms:
There are ten individually decorated en-suite rooms, many with Victorian baths and splendid views to the coast. With direct dial phones, television and radio, laundry, valet service, trouser press, tea and coffee making facilities and hair dryer, we lacked for nothing at all! There are two Master bedrooms, including one with a magnificent Victorian four poster bed, which is ideal for honeymooners or that special occasion.
The Dining Room:
Is in what was once the old Billiard room and the original Cuban mahogany panelling lends itself perfectly to delightful dinners by candlelight. If you’re planning a small celebration there’s also an oak panelled private dining room that looks out onto the garden and the coast, which is perfect to cope with up to twelve people. The award winning restaurant was a pleasure to visit and we enjoyed savouring the traditional country house recipes. Taking afternoon tea in the library was another treat that we both enjoyed.
The garden:
The hotel has a stunning seven-acre garden and a croquet lawn. You really cannot fail to relax and unwind in such tranquil surroundings. The weather was perfect when we were there and to wander around the grounds was an ideal way to de stress.
What’s of interest nearby?
There’s so much to do in this area of Wales. You are within an easy drive of Cardiff with its castle and Techniquest, the modern science exhibition in the heart of regenerated Cardiff Bay development. Castle Coch, Llancaiach Fawr Manor House, the National Museum of Wales and the Big Pit Mining Museum, are favourites for folk that get pleasure from history. If you enjoy nature, then the magnificent gardens, seasonal open air theatre and music can be enjoyed at Dyffryn Gardens. The location is perfect for touring South Wales; the Gower Peninsula and Brecon Beacons are all easily reached and the hotel is conveniently close to Cardiff International Airport.
Weddings:
I cannot think of a more romantic, intimate setting for a civil ceremony for up to sixty guests.
Business: An ideal venue for conferences or seminars.
