Ty Mawr Mansion, Aberaeron, Ceredigion |
Ty Mawr Mansion is a rural hotel, nestled in 12 acres of idyllic countryside. It is the only place offering 5 star quality accommodation and dining in the Ceredigion area. We’d all like to have wealthy friends with grand country homes, and as I approached Ty Mawr I imagined that I was simply visiting friends and looking forward to a relaxing weekend break. Off to a good start as I was welcomed at the entrance by owners Catherine and Martin McAlpine, and no, I didn't get special treatment as a journalist; all Ty Mawr guests are special. Then my experience just got better and better and I’d summarise by saying Ty Mawr provides luxurious, yet comfortable rooms and outstanding cuisine in a friendly and warm atmosphere. So allow me to tempt you further …
The Bedrooms:
Individually furnished and decorated to the highest standard, rich and traditional décor with a modern twist, the rooms just ooze quality. With comfortable sitting rooms in all suites you’ll find Egyptian cotton bed linen, CD players, radios, LCD TV’s, DVD and video players, computers and free broadband, courtesy trays with homemade biscuits and cookies. As for the bathrooms, I can only described them as lavish, with either massive freestanding jet stream showers with steam room (and for those like me that like to prolong their bathing experience, there are shower radios) or jacuzzi baths with extra large rain showers, and oversized fluffy towels – pure bliss.
The Restaurant:
Is in the very capable hands of Head Chef Paul Owens, a very talented man and if you haven’t managed to eat here yet – boy, are you missing out. The man is a genius and he gets even further praise by using local produce. Currently they have their own pork, grow many types of vegetables and a new kitchen garden is already underway.
What’s of interest nearby?
To the east lies Brecon Beacons National Park so whether you’re a walker, climber, or just want to enjoy the stunning scenery by car, you’ll love it. Four miles away is the picturesque harbour of Aberaeron and the National Trust property of Llanerchaeron. The University town of Aberystwyth and its Arts Centre is nearby, as is the Rheidol railway. The Cardiganshire coast also beckons with superb scenery and places for you to explore.
Why visit?
Because, quite simply, I cannot give you one single reason why not! Ty Mawr dates back over 250 years, but the last two have seen a massive refurbishment in the hands of the McAlpine family. Situated 2 hours from Cardiff and only 21/2 hours from the Midlands, you’ll find luxurious accommodation and a friendly atmosphere where nothing is too much trouble for the helpful yet very professional staff. Ty Mawr has been called Ceredigion’s best-kept-secret, but as I’m not very good at keeping secrets – you now know all about it! I’m certain that anyone, having once stayed here, will want to return to this very special venue.
And the B&B cost per night?
Double £140 per room per night. Suites from £170 per room per night .
